About Us

Hammond Street Senior Center has a proven track record in providing services to the elder population of the greater Bangor area. We have been operating successfully since 1999 as the only full-time senior center in the region. HSSC has grown from an empty, dilapidated bank into a thriving and very dynamic source of energy in the downtown district. The astonishing growth rate of the Center is a statement of the extensive need met by the Center and the Couri Foundation. The goal driving the creation of Hammond Street Senior Center was and remains "to contribute to the physical, intellectual and emotional well-being of senior citizens, while allowing participants to maximize their independence."

The level of enthusiasm and increasing membership encouraged HSSC to expand the organization to include the Fitness Center. Our newly renovated Fitness Center has a monthly membership rate of approximately 110 individuals. The Hammond Street Senior Center Fitness Center offers a complete array of state-of-the-art fitness equipment. We have:
  • Treadmills
  • Bicycles
  • Step machines
  • Elliptical Trainer
  • Full line of benches and free weights
  • Stability balls
  • Wobble board
  • Resistance tubing
  • Complete line of Cybex exercise machines
In the fall of 2003, 64 members received achievement awards for two continous years of participation; these members are exceptional role models and deserved recognition for their efforts.

HSSC offers a wide array of social and educational activities. Our HSSC University classes offer education in the areas of:
  • Art
  • Pottery
  • Holistic health
  • Health and fitness
  • Literature
  • History
  • Computer skills
  • Cooking
  • Quilting
  • Photography
  • Dancing
  • Various crafts
HSSC has groups of seniors who meet regularly to participate in sewing or knitting groups which provide chemo caps, angel blankets, preemie hats, kitty blankets, or lapghans to community residents in need.

We have two annual art shows, one is displayed in the Bangor Public Library each fall and the other is at HSSC in the spring. They are great sources of inspiration to budding artists of all ages. Our artist-in-residence Ellen Beattie, and our pottery instructor Dennis Martin, bring out the best in their students, and our art department continues to grow as our needs exceed the current curriculum.

Health and fitness play a huge role in HSSC activities and class schedules. We offer:
  • Yoga
  • Dancing (Ballroom and Line Dancing)
  • QiGong
  • Lifestyle and weight management
  • Outdoor adventures
  • Shiatsu
  • RSVP Bone Builders
  • Three levels of strength training
The Fitness Facility enables over 110 seniors to participate in group exercise or individualized strength training programs, as well as cardiovascular exercise.

HSSC also serves as a meeting place. We hold events such as social teas, bingo, cribbage games, as well as educational lectures on diverse topics. Many of our members simply come to the Center seeking a friendly face.
