Free Access to Social Space:

Consistent and satisfying social engagement is a critical counterbalance to the isolation and depression that too often comes with out-living one’s peers. Making new friends can be intimidating at any age, but it can seem especially intimidating for older individuals with limited interaction outside of their own family or in the community.

Hammond Street Senior Center is a warm, inviting atmosphere filled with laughter and endless opportunities that appeal to most every interest – a safe place for seniors to make new friends comfortably and easily based on common interests.

  • Guest speakers, informative presentations, live performances and holiday activities & events
  • Monthly social teas and art galleries featuring members, an annual dance and events to get involved volunteering with or just enjoy
  • A computer lab with free high-speed Internet and beginner courses in Web surfing, email, word processing and digital photography

HSSC Senior University:

Research shows that regular intellectual stimulation, such as the challenge that engaging in life long learning classes can provide, keeps our brains active, growing and protected against some of the diminished cognitive capacity associated with aging.

Through HSSC Senior University, members can take courses across diverse disciplines, such as painting and pottery to ballroom dancing and current world issues. Most courses are presented in eight-week semesters up to five times a year. Additional special workshops, trainings and short courses are offered periodically. Included in course registration, students can utilize fully stocked studios for art, sewing, crafting, pottery, and dance to hone skills and further explore new concepts.

Check out our current semester course catalog under “Classes”

The Best Little-Known Club

Hammond Street Senior Center always aimed to be the best multipurpose center seniors could ask for – but we never intended to be a “secret” club.  Yet, the two questions we hear the most are “Where are you located?” and “How come I never heard about you before?

Two Hammond Street is located behind Mexicali Blues and along the Kenduskeag Stream – on the tiny piece of Hammond Street that most people think is already State Street.

Open Monday-Friday, 8:30-4:30 p.m., HSSC boasts diverse offerings all housed on three fully handicapped-accessible floors in the beautifully restored former Merrill Trust Bank in the heart of Downtown Bangor.

Now that you know about us, Come see what you’ve been missing!
